How is life in Canada different from the United States?
Q. I'd like to know if there are any differneces in the lifestyle of Canada as opposed to the US. Here in the US people always seem to be stressed out about work and finances. Of course there is always that stigma that Americans are rude. However, I've heard that people in Canada are much nicer. So I'm wondering if the quality of life in Canada is different, or is it just basically the same?

A. In Canada it's harder to start a business and be entrepreneurial but easier to pursue the arts because the government subsidizes art there. In Canada you pay higher taxes but you get something back for it; schools, medical care and a decent retirement plan. In the US most of your tax money goes to support the military and you have to pay for school and medical care out of your own pocket. In some places you also have to pay separately for garbage removal, police and fire services (on TOP of the local tax you've already paid). Plus in the US unless you work for the government you have no guaranteed sick leave, no maternity leave and no pension plan. Americans have to plan everything for themselves and finance it out of what they earn… [cont.]

What is Canada doing towards the foreign sale of water and diversion of water?
Q. I would like to know what Canada is doing in the foreign sale of water, such as what they are selling, how much and too where. I would also like to know information about the diversion of water in Canada, websites and reports would be appreciated if they could be provided! Thanks
Asked by adman266266 - Mon Dec 3 09:21:02 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The link is a case study on this very issue. Stopping water diversions from Canada to the US. I'll quote the start and attach the study as a link. 1. The Issue Canada is attempting to ban its massive exports of fresh water to its neighbors including the United States. Canada believes that water will become the most essential environmental source in the next century. The United States on the other hand, has always been refusing this ban that may harm other nations who lack such a vital source. Canada, as it holds a fifth of the world s fresh water supply, fears to face a huge environmental problem if it carries on shipping a huge quantities of water to external nations.

A. I'd check out McGill or Concordia. They are both in Montreal, QC, which is a primarily french speaking but the universities themselves are english speaking. You can get the best of both worlds here and embrace both english speaking and french canadian culture and language in the beautiful city of Montreal.

How is the number of days a Canada PR lives in Canada counted?
Q. A Canada PR (permanent resident) is required to accumulate at least 2 years (out of every 5 years) of living in Canada in order to maintain the PR status. However I am wondering how they actually count the number of days a PR lived in Canada. When a person drives from the United States to Canada, neither US border officers nor Canada border officers record anything. When a person drives from Canada to the US, nothing is recorded either. If the person keeps traveling between the US and Canada without going to a 3rd country (so nothing is stamped on the passport), how does Canada immigration officers know how many days the person actually lives in Canada?
Asked by Stan - Sun Jan 4 10:54:29 2009 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Simply put, you are incorrect. Your license at minimum is recorded each time you leave and enter the country by car. When presenting ID (passport etc) at the border, it is also recorded. Canada and the US share this information, so the US knows when you return to Canada, and Canada knows when you leave. In the past, there might have been opportunity to leave or enter without a permanent record, but today, each passage is recorded.

Why are emails from someone in Canada delivered to others faster than to me in Colorado?
Q. Someone with a Canada email address is emailing me in Colorado and someone else in Canada. He is actually physically located in South America at the present time. The other person in Canada is receiving the emails and responding, with a copy to me, before I get the original email. The originals show up in my inbox a long time later. They are in my address book and the emails are not going to spam. Why the delay by Yahoo? Thank you.

A. Does the person getting them first have the same email service as the sender? that may make it go to the internal list first. Also sometimes there are settings for how often your email client checks the yahoo site for new emails. it could be set to every hour or once a day or something odd.

A. You cannot get a visa at the point of entry. However, there is a Canadain consulate office in Buffalo and you can go there to get a visa. 1st site below gives visa process info. 2nd site gives address, phone and all info on the consulate in Buffalo so you may go there to apply for a visa for Canada.

A. Time travel perhaps? I don't know if this counts in your case but there is such a thing as a "returning residents permit" which allows you to be outside of the country for a period of time without loosing your permanent resident status. IT does cost and there are limits but it is possible to stay out long and still keep your status...to a point. You will need to make a decision one way or the other about if you want your status. If you want it bad enough it's worth working for.

Is Canada the answer to the American open/illegal immigration problem?
Q. The Canadian economy seems to be doing well and, from everything I've heard, needs more workers. Canada has great benefits and, from what I've seen, Canadians preach acceptance of "multi-culturalism." Would Canada/Canadians openly accept the large number of illegal immigrants crossing the Mexican border into the US seeking better economic prospects that seemingly the majority of Americans oppose their presence? Would those coming from "South of the border" into the US find Canada a suitable home? Should some sort of pipeline (ie a train or bus system) be built through various points of the US's Southern border into points of Canada to get people there to work? Would this be acceptable to all, to none, to some or is this a ridiculous… [cont.]

A. Canada has a right to control its own immigration laws, just as we do. I'm sure that if they wanted to open their borders, they know how to do that.

Why Canada 1974 stamp collection is much more expensive than others?
Q. 1974 Canada stamp collection is 250$. So expensive, why?
Asked by Boren Z - Thu Nov 8 19:11:47 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If the collection is just the single stamps that Canada issued in 1974, I don't know why it'd be so expensive. The single stamps together would probably be worth about all together $20 unused at most. Unless they're full sheets, error stamps, or something very unusual, that sounds like too much money.

Canada is a west east country trying to survive in a north south continent. What does it mean?
Q. It might be because the US has more varied temperatures than Canada because Canada is more narrow and stretches west to east but i think it has something to do with Canada's landform regions. Thank you.
Asked by Hiba A - Sat Oct 18 19:21:23 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The geography is very similar. The Rockies are in the same place, the most fertile land is in the same place, between the Rockies and the Great Lakes. The only major difference is the Canadian Shield, which limits agriculture in the East, but it makes up for it with easy access to minerals. I stand by my first answer. Climate limits development to the north so it has to spread east-west.

Q. I just read a question from a woman who says her employer has told her she either has to come back now (she is only 7 months in), or risk being laid off for a year. Is this allowed? I've tried the Government of Canada website, but all I can find is benefit payments you're entitled to.

A. Hamilton nowhere was it more apparent than at St. Julie Billiart Parish Saturday, June 19, how much the Catholic church has placed itself in the center of the immigration debate. Inside the church s bingo hall, hundreds of Mexicans lined up for passports or Mexican IDs at the Mobile Mexican Consulate s Office. In front of the cathedral on Dayton Street, dozens of activists marched along the street with picket signs, some reading Immigrants welcome. Illegals go home. The Rev. Manuel Viera said the church for years has agreed to host the consular office as a way to serve the community here, very much in line with the teaching of the Catholic church. A. www.cic.gc.ca There is no cheap and easy way to immigrate to Canada. There is currently a backlog of around 900,000 and Canada only admits 250,000 per year. Legislation was passed recently to speed up the process, but it is likely that it will speed it up by raising the bar for entry. If you go to the website you will see that they suggest that you don't bother applying if you don't have the required points.

Petitioning a Caregiver in Canada before returning for residency?
Q. I am Canadian and planning to return back home to Canada in 2 to 3 years. In my absence, can I apply to petition a caregiver while I am a non resident pending my return to Canada?
Asked by South Canadian - Thu Apr 2 20:27:41 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. NO the caregiver MUST be living in Canada WITH the family - the family MUST be in Canada when they apply. The caregiver will live in and work for you for 2 years. Once that 2 years is complete they can apply for PR status and get their caregiver work permit changed to an open permit, so they can work for whomever they choose.

Q. I'm quite confused right after I choose print the shipping label and choose Canada Post as the shipping carrier on ebay what do I've to do from there on? Do I've to measure the dimensions and weight myself cause I don't have a scale.

A. If you've already printed the shipping label, the measurements are specified in order to pay for the shipping price. You just have to attach the label onto the package and put it in the mail. For instance, if you chose "Thick envelope or small package" it will calculate for you. However, it asked for the weight to charge your account for the label. You may wish to verify what you entered.

A. It s a straight shot along the 401 (equivalent to a major interstate) from Toronto to Montreal, and Kingston is about halfway. Kingston is a pretty old city, with stone buildings from the 1800 s and a massive stone fort built to defend the mouth of the Rideau Canal against US invasion. On Wednesday evenings they put on a very impressive military retreat, based on the British Army drill book of that era. A bit closer to Montreal is Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, with original pioneer buildings moved to the site to preserve them from the flooding that resulted from the construction of the St Lawrence Seaway. It s a great living museum. If you have some time and want to go a bit slower, you might take Highway 2 some of the time. It… [cont.]
