How does a former employee retroactively change from a W-9 status to a W-4?
Q. For a job this summer, my 18 yr old freshman was told to fill out a W-9 at the start of her employmenrt. Neither income taxes nor social security were taken. For reason not expained here, it is essential she not be considered self-employed or contracted labor.

A. See for what her status should have been. If it appears that she should have been classified as an employee, she can fill out form SS-8 to request an IRS determination.
